This book details Anne Allbright Smith’s eleven days of discomfort and pain as she voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED) to bring about her own death. This was despite compassionate hospice care throughout. There is overwhelming public support for Medical Aid in Dying (MAID). Yet only ten states and the District of Columbia have MAID statutes on their books. Why won’t more legislators support the will of their constituents? By contrast, our pets have quick, humane and painless deaths. Ray Smith graduated from Washington and Lee University with a B.A. in English, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. This was followed by a year in France as a Fulbright Scholar; a tour with the Army in Germany; and a long career as a commercial banker, in New York City and London. He and Anne raised two children during a marriage that spanned sixty years.
