Beryllium is lighter than aluminium and more rigid than steel and when used as an additive in alloys, it confers a combination of properties on other metals. An evaluation of sources of exposure cites the combustion of fossil fuels as the most important source of atmospheric beryllium, with coal singled out as the main pollutant source.
